Viral Marketing - Compelling; Simple; Easy and…with Pirates?

Here at iStudio, we love our widgets. They’re simple, cost efficient, effective and very cool. In fact, we love anything that allows an organization to harness the passion and enthusiasm of their customers.

last night, while indulging one of my very guilty pleasures, a celebrity gossip site called “What Would Tyler Durden Do?”, I saw this excellent widget from Disney to promote the upcoming movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

WWTDD is pretty much Not Safe For Work and the comments section is a dicey place to go with some pretty graphic posts so I got some screen caps to illustrate why I think this is such a great initiative.

1. Sticky

How can you not want to play this? It’s imposing, the design is great and it’s compelling. I played it straight away.

2. Interesting

While playing the video, instead of having the whole image become a player, the player is just a small strip of the image – leaving a border that reminds you of the key messages. Title. Stars. Date. Awesome.

3. Built to spread

You can click on the “Get Your Own…” button and rip out the HTML code to embed it on your site. Thanks YouTube!

4. Dynamic

The video that plays on your blog/Web site will change depending on how close to the release date you are. I’m sure the content will also change when the DVD is released.

The key with any sort of viral marketing that you want to do on the Web is this:

Make it compelling; make it simple and make it easy.

And if you can, make it with Pirates!

Love how well it streams - they’re getting some great quality videos to stream lately.

You’ve hit the nail right on the head with “Compelling, Simple and Easy”. They’re definitely 3 “Must Have’s” for any good viral campaign.

I wrote a post recently around these three points, titled “6 Steps to Viral Marketing Success”.

P.S. – The eyetracking report in your post on the 16th was great!
